As anyone who’d be reading this probably already knows, I bought a new house on November 30th. The whole house needs to be painted, including the doors, baseboards, and trim. It’s overwhelming. I’ve started a lot but finished almost nothing. The basement has been completed though. I started with the basement due to the amount of time I spend in it. My after-work hangout being ugly, cluttered, and dreary wasn’t working for me.
The color of the basement was the SAME COLOR that the rest of the house is painted. Every inch of the house is that terrible brown – even the bathrooms and closet walls. It makes me feel like I’m in a burlap bag where colors go to die.
The wall color now is called “Moonlit Snow” by Behr. It’s a beautiful purple-toned gray that shifts in different lighting, which I love. I always use a satin finish for my paint because I like a little bit of light reflecting on the walls – it makes a room feel brighter. I changed the ceiling bulbs to Philips Hue bulbs. I also replaced the horrible brown blinds with a 2″ cordless faux wood blind from Home Depot. In case you’re not aware, they’ll actually trim blinds to your desired width at the store at no cost. There’s no need to order custom blinds!
I used an iPad/Macbook app called Home Design 3D to lay out the space before I moved in. You can add furniture and adjust its color and dimensions to match your own. It worked out really well and helped me figure out a way to keep my kitchen island stools from my old house, as the kitchen here does not have one. The bar table is the perfect place to sit with your drink while waiting for someone to finish their turn at the pinball machine.
The bar table is from Wayfair. The bar stools and console table are from Target. The TV stand is from Home Depot. The sectional is from Value City Furniture.
